Well, this is a very out of date file. :) I'll take some time to go
through it properly, but to go straight to your problem, it's with this
ModulePath /usr/local_install/00r1/libexec/fvwm/2.2.4:\
/usr/local_install/97r1.6/libexec/fvwm/2.2.2:\
/usr/local_install/96r1/lib/X11/fvwm2
Do not to this. Just comment it out entirely and then everything will be
back to normal for you.

Thanks Thomas - tried that and the buttonbar now is massive - extends across and outside the visible
display ( see below ) . Any thoughts on this one ? / rgds
Yes, you now need to update not only the module alias syntax for
FvwmButtons, but also configure the number of rows/columns for the overall
container, and the individual containers inside the FvwmButtons instance.

Do not use a BoxSize other than "dumb" for this (the default).

If I get time later on I'll take a look -- it's a fair amount of work for me
to have to convert stuff over. I have to say that fvwm-convert-2.6 did an
OK job at it, but missed some line-continuation points for the ModulePath
and Pixmap path commands, but these are deprecated anyway.

Hi Thomas - btw, here's what the size should be like ( I had made a
cut-paste of the button-bar before the session crashed for good..)
Well, I would do the following:

1. Get your current config, and run it through fvwm-convert-2.6 (if you're
not using FVWM 2.6.2, you'll need to be; the version of FVWM you were
using, and seemingly had this config working with, hasn't been supported
for many years) -- the half-done.diff file attached to this email shows
what fvwm-convert-2.6 made of your original file, and includes a couple
of tweaks by me -- you'll see those commented with "## TA:" at the
beginning.

2. Convert over the remaining module alias syntax as I've described, and
shown by the .diff attached to this email -- I've at least started you
off.

3. Your main problem now is the way panels in FvwmButtons work; that got
rewritten in FVWM 2.3.X, ISTR. You should read the "CONVERTING OLD
PANEL CONFIGURATIONS" section in "man FvwmButtons" -- this will likely
obviate the need for using containers as well for your FvwmButtons
configuration.

Beyond that, the rest of your file looks OK. Step 3 though might be a lot
of work for you, and if that's the case, then I would pinch the CDE buttons
configuration used in fvwm-themes and adapt that. For convenience, I'm
attaching that along with this email as well.
