System clock in FVWM: A new discovery!

Hi!

This is not a question but a report about a new discovery.

Back in 2010, when I discovered FVWM as a useful window manager, I needed
a digital clock, which simply shows date, time and weekday. I searched and
filtered quite long and found xclock.

This week, nearly 5 years later, I discovered conky, a system monitor. What
do I need a system monitor for, when I mainly work in VirtualBoxes or Xen
based VNC sessions, I thought, and put it aside. Today, I again thought
about for what a conky could be useful. Then I noticed a lousy configured
xclock with a way too large lettering on a 24 inches 16:10 display, which
was initially designed for a 19 inches 5:4 display and then it dawned
on me: I DISCOVERED A NEW CLOCK FOR MY WINDOW MANAGER!!!

In the next weeks, when I continue setting up new Debian based
productive systems, I will try to replace this combersomly
configurable xclock by conky.

Why do I post this via the FVWM list?

Simply, because:

- I needed 5 years to discover that conky could be used
as a system clock (nobody told me that before)

- If you are searching for a clock, it is not obvious to
have a system monitor in mind

So, if somebody asks you for a digital system clock, then
don't forget to mention 'conky' to save him/her five years
of struggling with xclock ;-)

I use my own :-)

Back in the late nineties I liked xticktalk, which was kind of a speaking
clock: it displayed the time in natural language (e.g. "Ten past four PM")
and supported several languages besides English. Unfortunately xticktalk
appears to have been abandoned now; at least I can't find it anywhere. So
I resorted to writing my own from scratch. When I'm happy with it, I'll
release it into the wild, hoping that others are willing to contribute
support for their native languages.

Yep. I discovered xdaliclock some time in the early '90s, and have
been using it ever since. If it's not broken, why fix it? At the time,
I think I was still using MWM. FVWM followed shortly afterwards,
though.

Yep. I discovered xdaliclock some time in the early '90s, and have

Yeah, xdaliclock is nice. Note that you can make it use whatever font you
have available, including TrueType and what have you.

When I was first introduced to Fvwm (as an unofficial IRIX port custom-
compiled for the SGI Indy) the configuration I started out with (copied
from the person who had compiled Fvwm for IRIX in the first place) had
xdaliclock in FvwmButtons. It wasn't until later that I discovered the
xticktalk I mentioned earlier and managed to build that on IRIX.

There's a whole bunch of desktop clock applications out there, though.
Some are simple, some are fancy. Some are straightforward, others are
really original. There are even binary clocks and everything. Whatever you
can think of, it's probably out there somewhere.
